VIJAYAWADA DIVISION - HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE


The Vijayawada station was constructed in 1888 when the Southern Maharattan Railway's main eastward route was connected with other lines going until Vijayawada. The next year (1889), the Nizam's guaranteed State Railway constructed a line between Secunderabad Railway Station andVijayawada as Bezawada extension railway. By this, the station became a junction of lines from three directions. On November 1, 1899, the broad gauge line was constructed between Vijayawada and Chennai, making rail journey between Chennai to Mumbai, Howrah, Delhi, Hyderabad possible. From the decades from then the Vijayawada railway station was shaped as a junction until the Nationalisation of all the independent ailways in India as Indian Railways under the Ministry of Railways in 1950 by the Government of India. The Vijayawada railway station as the headquarters of Vijayawada Division was assigned to the Southern Railway. on 14.04.1966, a new zone, On Formation of South Central Railway on 02.10.1966, Vijayawada Division became part of it. 

Bezwada Railway Station was founded with a small shed in the beginning.  The Old Station building was constructed with Mangalore tiles by 1928.  The new Station building was opened to the public on 19.01.1979. The Route Relay Interlocking Cabin at Vijayawada was opened on 24.01.1976. 

EVOLUTION OF VIJAYAWADA DIVISION: 

The Madras and Southern Mahratta (MSM) Railway was  opened to public on 01.07.1856 with headquarters at Madras.  The Bezwada District was part of MSM Railway, the other Districts being Rayapuram  and   Podanur.  The Regional Transportation Superintendent (RTS) was incharge of the MSM Railway with Royapuram as headquarters and the District transportation Superintendent (DTS) was incharge of the Bezwada District.

The MSM Railway was amalgamated with Southern Railway in 1951.  The Bezwada District spread from Tondiyarpet to Waltair (both exclusive) and West Block Cabin of Vijayawada Station on Kazipet side.  

The Vijayawada railway station is today the busiest and the biggest railway junction and one of the busiest railway stations in South India
